Energetic Cord Cutting for Relationship Closure
When the Relationship Is Over but the Connection Remains
The relationship has ended. Perhaps you were the one who ended it. Perhaps you know, logically, that going back would be a terrible idea.
And yet, you still can’t seem to let go.
You think about them far more often than you’d like. You replay conversations, wonder what they’re doing or imagine what you should have said. A message, photograph, song or seemingly innocent reminder can pull you straight back into the relationship—sometimes months or even years after it ended.
You may have deleted their number, removed them from social media and created as much physical distance as possible, but part of you still feels connected.
This can be incredibly frustrating, especially when your rational mind is perfectly clear that the relationship is over.
But ending a relationship practically doesn’t always mean we have released it emotionally or energetically.
Why is it so difficult to let go of a relationship?
When we share our lives with someone, we don’t simply exchange words and experiences. We invest time, hope, emotion, attention and energy in the relationship.
We imagine a future with them. We create habits and routines around their presence. We may also unconsciously attach parts of our identity, safety, worth or happiness to the connection.
This means that when the relationship ends, we’re not only grieving the person. We may also be grieving:
- The future we thought we would have
- The version of ourselves we were in the relationship
- The hope that the other person might eventually change
- The love, validation or closure we wanted but never received
- The time and energy we invested
- The possibility of finally being chosen
Sometimes we aren’t only holding on to what happened. We’re holding on to what we desperately hoped might happen.
That’s one reason why “just move on” is rarely helpful advice.
The relationship can end while the pattern continues
You might no longer be speaking to the person, yet still be having regular conversations with them in your head.
You might replay what went wrong, imagine different outcomes or feel the urge to check their social media. You may compare new people to them or notice that your emotional state still shifts according to what they are—or aren’t—doing.
In other words, the relationship may no longer be active in the outside world, but it is still taking up a great deal of space inside you.
This doesn’t mean you’re weak, obsessive or failing at moving on. It means there is something in the connection that has not yet been fully released.
Sometimes that’s grief. Sometimes it’s anger, betrayal, longing or unfinished business. Sometimes the relationship touched a much older wound such as not feeling chosen, loved, safe or good enough.
And sometimes it can feel as though an energetic tie remains between you.
What is an energetic cord?
From a shamanic or energetic perspective, cords can form between people who have shared a significant emotional connection.
You can think of an energetic cord as a channel through which attention, emotion and energy continue to flow. Not all bonds are unhealthy, and not every relationship needs to be energetically “cut.” But a connection may become draining when it keeps you entangled in a relationship that has ended or in a dynamic that is no longer good for you.
You might experience this as:
- Constantly thinking about the person
- Feeling emotionally pulled back towards them
- Struggling to move forward, despite wanting to
- Repeatedly checking their messages or social media
- Feeling drained after thinking about or interacting with them
- Carrying anger, guilt or responsibility that doesn’t feel entirely yours
- Sensing that part of you is still waiting for them
- Feeling unable to open fully to a new chapter
This doesn’t mean every difficult feeling is caused by an energetic cord. Letting go is a human process, and grief needs time and care. But if you’ve done a great deal of thinking, talking and processing and still feel tethered to the relationship, energetic cord cutting may offer another way of working with the attachment.
What happens during an energetic cord-cutting session?
Energetic cord cutting is a shamanic healing process intended to help release the ties that keep you bound to a person or relationship.
It isn’t about pretending the relationship didn’t matter. It doesn’t erase your memories, invalidate the love you felt or remove the lessons you gained.
It’s about releasing the aspects of the connection that continue to drain you, pull you backwards or prevent you from being fully present in your own life.
During the session, we work with the energetic connection between you and the other person. The intention is to release what no longer belongs with you, return what isn’t yours to carry and call your own energy back.
This can create a clearer boundary between your life and theirs.
Cord cutting is not about punishing, rejecting or controlling the other person. Nor is it a way to force yourself to stop caring. It is an intentional process of separation and reclamation.
The essence of the work is:
I honour what this relationship was, and I choose not to remain bound by it.
Does cord cutting mean I’ll forget them?
No. Letting go and forgetting are not the same thing.
Someone can have been deeply important to you without needing to occupy your thoughts, influence your choices or hold your energy indefinitely.
The goal isn’t indifference. It’s freedom.
You may still have feelings to process after a cord-cutting session, particularly if the relationship involved significant grief, trauma or betrayal. Healing rarely happens in one neat moment. But releasing the energetic attachment can support the wider process of creating distance, rebuilding your sense of self and moving forward.
It’s also important to remember that energetic work is most effective when supported by practical boundaries. If you continue checking the person’s social media, responding to late-night messages or repeatedly reopening the relationship, the attachment is continually being reinforced.
Cord cutting supports your decision to let go but your everyday choices help you maintain it.
You don’t need their participation or permission to find closure
One of the most painful parts of a relationship ending is waiting for the other person to give us what we need to move on.
We may want an apology, an honest explanation or an acknowledgement of the harm they caused. We may want them to finally understand us, choose us or confirm that the relationship mattered.
Sometimes that conversation happens. Often it doesn’t.
And even when it does, it may not bring the relief we imagined.
Closure isn’t always something another person can give you. Sometimes it’s a decision you make for yourself: to stop waiting, to release the hope that they will become someone different and to reclaim the parts of you that have remained caught in the relationship.
You can honour what the relationship meant without carrying it into every chapter that follows.
Are you ready to release the relationship and reclaim your energy?
My one-to-one Energetic Cord Cutting session is for you if a relationship has ended—or needs to end—but you still feel emotionally or energetically tethered to it.
This may be a romantic relationship, friendship, family connection or another significant bond that you are struggling to release.
Together, we’ll work gently with the connection so you can let go of what is no longer yours to carry, call your energy back and create space for your own life again.
You don’t have to erase the past in order to stop living inside it.
