Understanding Hidden Patterns with Family Constellations
Have you ever found yourself asking:
Why do I keep ending up here?
Why do I struggle to set boundaries?
Why do I keep attracting emotionally unavailable partners?
Why do I feel responsible for everyone else’s happiness?
Why do I know exactly what I need to do, yet somehow can’t seem to do it?
These are some of the most common questions I hear from clients, and for years I approached them through coaching, helping women build confidence, trust themselves more deeply and create meaningful change.
Then I discovered Family Constellations.
It added a completely new dimension to how I understand human behaviour, and it fundamentally changed the way I work.
Because what if the answer isn’t simply inside you?
What if your behaviour makes perfect sense when viewed in the context of the systems you’ve belonged to throughout your life?
We Were Never Meant to Be Understood in Isolation
One of the biggest shifts that systemic work offers is this:
Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with you?”, it asks, “What system are you faithfully responding to?”
Every one of us belongs to systems.
We are born into families. We become part of schools, workplaces, friendships and intimate relationships. Each of these systems develops its own patterns, expectations and ways of maintaining balance.
Whether those patterns are healthy or unhealthy, they shape us.
And often, they continue shaping us long after we’ve left them.
I’ve become increasingly fascinated by this idea, not just through Family Constellations, but through my growing love of beekeeping, birding and the natural world.
Nature has an extraordinary way of explaining what it means to live in relationship.
If the bees disappear from a garden, we don’t assume the bees are somehow “broken.”
We ask different questions.
Has the habitat changed?
Is there enough food?
Have pesticides affected the ecosystem?
Has something disrupted the delicate balance that allows the whole system to thrive?
The behaviour of one part only makes sense when we understand the whole.
Human beings are no different.
The Roles We Learn Without Realising It
As children, we adapt to the environments we grow up in.
Perhaps you became the peacemaker because conflict felt frightening.
Perhaps you learned that being helpful earned you love.
Perhaps you discovered that staying quiet kept everyone calm.
Perhaps you became fiercely independent because nobody else seemed available.
These aren’t personality flaws.
They’re intelligent adaptations.
At the time, they helped you belong.
They helped you stay connected to the people you depended on.
The challenge is that our nervous system often continues running those same strategies decades later, even when they’re no longer serving us.
The little girl who learned not to upset Dad may become the woman who struggles to express her needs in her marriage.
The eldest sibling who held everything together may become the leader who carries everyone else’s workload.
The child who became responsible for other people’s emotions may grow into the woman who feels guilty every time she says “no.”
From a systemic perspective, these behaviours aren’t random.
They make sense.
Why Change Can Feel So Difficult
One of the most important principles in systems thinking is that systems naturally seek stability.
Not necessarily health.
Stability.
Think about a relationship where one partner always gives in to keep the peace.
It’s not an ideal dynamic, but it’s familiar.
Everyone knows their role.
Now imagine that person starts setting healthy boundaries.
Suddenly the familiar pattern changes.
The other partner may become frustrated.
The children may feel unsettled.
Even the person setting the boundary may experience anxiety or guilt, despite knowing they’re doing something healthy.
Not because they’ve made the wrong decision.
Because the entire system is reorganising around a new way of relating.
This is one of the reasons lasting change often feels uncomfortable before it feels liberating.
Seeing the Bigger Picture
Traditional coaching often focuses on changing thoughts, behaviours or habits.
Systemic coaching asks a different set of questions.
What role have you learned to play?
What unconscious loyalties might be influencing your choices?
What patterns have been repeated across generations?
What are you carrying that may never have been yours in the first place?
Family Constellations help bring these hidden dynamics into awareness.
Rather than focusing solely on the individual, we begin exploring the relationships, patterns and unseen influences that shape the way you experience your life today.
Very often, the problem isn’t that you’re broken.
It’s that you’ve been faithfully responding to a system that required you to become someone you no longer need to be.
Why This Work Matters
Understanding the systems you’ve belonged to isn’t about blaming your parents or reliving the past.
It’s about developing compassion for yourself.
When you understand why you became who you are, shame begins to soften.
Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?”, you begin asking, “What have I been carrying?”
And from that place, genuine change becomes possible.
You gain something incredibly valuable:
Choice.
The ability to honour the past without allowing it to dictate your future.
My Approach
This is why I love combining systemic coaching with Family Constellations.
Coaching helps you move forwards with clarity, confidence and practical action.
Family Constellations help uncover the deeper patterns, unconscious loyalties and family dynamics that may be influencing your life without your awareness.
Together, they create an approach that is both compassionate and transformational.
Because I don’t believe you’re broken.
I believe your life makes sense in the context of the systems that have shaped you.
And when those systems become visible, new possibilities begin to emerge.
