You’re doing all the right things.
The bubble baths. The skincare. The occasional yoga class.
Maybe even a meditation app you halfheartedly open before bed.
But you’re still feeling….
Exhausted.
Scattered.
Disconnected.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And more importantly—it’s not your fault. Most of us have been sold a version of self-care that completely misses the mark.
Self-Care Isn’t Just “Doing Nice Things for Yourself”
Self-care, at its core, is care.
Not distraction. Not numbing. Not a luxury you earn only after burning out.
Real self-care is listening deeply to yourself—your body, your mind, your emotional state—and responding to what you actually need in the moment.
That might mean saying no.
Going to bed earlier.
Crying without apologizing.
Or sitting in the garden for 5 quiet minutes—no phone, no agenda.
As functional medicine health coach Sam shared on the latest episode of my podcast, “If you care for someone else, you’d listen to them. You’d notice what they need and respond with love. Why don’t we do the same for ourselves?”
Numbing vs. Nourishing: Are You Avoiding or Attuning?
Let’s get real: a lot of our “self-care” is actually a form of avoidance.
We zone out with Netflix, pour the wine, scroll Instagram, or pack our calendars to avoid feeling. Because sitting with discomfort is… uncomfortable.
But the feelings you’re avoiding? They’re messengers.
Headaches. Stomach aches. Mood swings. These aren’t random. They’re signals your body is giving you that something’s off.
Until you learn to recognize and respond to those signals, no amount of surface-level pampering will truly help.
That’s where nervous system regulation comes in.
What Your Nervous System Has to Do with Everything
If you’re constantly feeling overwhelmed, anxious, reactive, or wired but tired—your nervous system is likely dysregulated.
And when you’re dysregulated, your body is in a constant state of survival. Even the kindest self-care will feel ineffective if your system is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze.
The key isn’t more effort. It’s more connection.
Reconnecting with your body.
Creating moments of stillness.
Practicing presence—not perfection.
And building nervous system capacity so you can feel safe again—in your life, in your body, in your choices.
What Real Self-Care Can Look Like
You don’t need to overhaul your life. You don’t need to add another “wellness” routine to your already full to-do list.
Start small. Start honest.
Here are a few real self-care practices I recommend:
- Take 5 minutes outside with a hot drink and no distractions.
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier.
- Learn to name your emotions instead of outrunning them.
- Try a Yoga Nidra or heart-focused breathing.
- Pause and ask: What do I need right now?
