We’ve all been there; your to-do list is overflowing, someone cuts you off in traffic or a loved one pushes your buttons. before you even have a chance to think, your body reacts: your heart races, your shoulder tense and maybe sharp words fly out of your mouth. This is the power of unchecked emotions in action. They’re not just fleeting feelings, they shape our behaviour, our relationships and the way we experience life.

Self-regulation is the key to reducing stress, putting yourself back in the driving seat of your life and no longer allowing your emotions to steer you all over the show.

How Emotions Affect Behaviour

Emotions are your internal energy in motion. They don’t just influence your mood, they drive your behaviour. When you’re calm and content, you’re more likely to respond thoughtfully. When you’re anxious, angry or stressed, your nervous system flips into survival mode. Suddenly, small inconveniences feel like massive threats to your existence and you may snap, withdraw or make decisions you later regret.

Think of your emotions as signals. They inform your behaviour before logic even enters the room.

How Emotions Decide What We Care About

Emotions also direct your attention and values. You care about what stirs you emotionally. Joy tells you where you feel fulfilled, frustration highlights where you feel blocked and grief shows you what you hold dear. In other words, emotions act as a compass. The more you allow negative emotions to direct your attention and focus, the more you’ll be buffeted around by thoughts, stories and feelings that keep you ruminating and stuck.

Why Self-Regulation Reduces Stress

Stress isn’t created by external circumstances; it’s created by your perception, that is the thoughts and subsequent feelings you have in response to your circumstances. Self-regulation is the practise of noticing your emotional, mental and behavioural patterns and choosing a response rather than being unconsciously driven by your internal state.

When you learn to regulate your emotions and behaviours, you:

  • Reduce overthinking and rumination
  • Respond with clarity instead of defensiveness
  • Stay grounded and focused during challenges

This doesn’t mean suppressing your emotions. It means being able to acknowledge them, understanding their message and choosing the most constructive response rather than a knee-jerk reaction.

Stress and Relationships

Stress rarely stays self-contained. When you’re carrying unregulated stress, it spills into your relationships. You may relate to being short-tempered with a partner (or being on the receiving end of your partner’s short fuse), impatient with your children, or feeling disconnected from your friends because your stress is all consuming. Over time, unchecked stress creates tension, misunderstandings and emotional distance.

Self-regulation helps you break that cycle. By calming your nervous system when you’re stressed, you can listen more openly, communicate more clearly and connect more compassionately. In turn, your relationships become a source of support rather than an added stressor.

HeartMath and the Power of Coherence

One of the most effective tools for self-regulation is the HeartMath system which uses science-backed techniques to bring your heart, mind and emotions into alignment – a state called coherence.

Here’s a brief insight into how Heart Focused Breathing works to reduce stress:

  • You focus your attention on the area around your heart whilst slowing your breathing
  • You self-generate a positive feeling like gratitude
  • This shifts your heart rhythm into a smooth coherent pattern

In this state, your nervous system calms, your stress hormones decrease and you have access to a higher level of executive functioning. Studies show that practising coherence not only lowers stress in the moment, but also builds resilience over time, meaning you are able to adapt to and recover from future challenges more quickly.

The Takeaway

Stress is unavoidable, but suffering isn’t. By learning to regulate your emotions, attitudes and behaviours, you put yourself back behind the wheel of your life. You gain clarity in decision making, foster healthier relationships and reduce the toll stress takes on your body and mind.

HeartMath’s coherence techniques are a simple, yet powerful way to practise this daily, helping you create a life where stress doesn’t run the show, but your calm, resilient self does.
