Where in your life are you settling for less?
We have Terri Hatcher to thank for this blog post, I saw an excerpt from her book ‘Burnt Toast’ and it resonated. If you make a piece of toast and burn it (assuming you didn’t intend to), do you still eat it, or do you make a new slice?
Eating burnt toast when you don’t really want to, either to avoid wasting said piece of toast or because you feel you have to is an interesting idea to ponder.
Replace burnt toast for ‘city you hate living in’, ‘loveless relationship’, ‘toxic work environment’ or ‘doing unfulfilling work just to pay bills’ and you’ll start to uncover where else in your life the burnt toast is showing up.
I don’t believe we’re here to robotically wake up every day, go through the motions for a few decades and then quietly die. I believe we all have the right to a fulfilling, enjoyable and meaningful life whilst we’re here on earth. Finding what that looks like for you and taking the steps towards making it happen requires courage and an action plan.
“What will you do with this one wild and precious life?”
– Mary Oliver
I ate burnt toast until I was 31. For me this looked like dysfunctional relationships and doing something I didn’t really love for a living. I got to a point when every fibre of my being was screaming for a change and for the chance to choose my path in life rather than simply walking the one that appeared before me.
When I made active choices about the direction I wanted to go in both in my business and in my personal life, my fulfilment levels started to shift, but it took asking for help in the form of a coach to get me there.
Here are a few of my tips for spotting where burnt toast is showing up in your life:
- Feeling stuck in a rut
- Apathy about your work
- No longer being willing to tolerate a person or situation
- Something you used to love no longer bringing you joy
- Feeling down or depressed
- Losing your creative spark
The good news is that you get to choose how you live your life and what you will or won’t accept. You have to be willing to acknowledge what it is you really want to do or experience in your life and start to make the necessary changes that will get you there.
Change isn’t always an easy thing to accomplish alone and I’m here to help. Once of my coaching superpowers (thanks to a wealth of experience of going through big life changes) is helping my clients navigate life transformations and supporting them along the way.
