Resilience isn’t about how hard you can cling on for dear life whilst you’re buffeted around by life’s challenges, it’s the skill of remaining grounded, flexible, adaptable and being able to bounce back from tough times.
When you understand how to build the habits and behaviours that support your resilience, everyday stressors and even the big unexpected curveballs become less of a threat. The more confident you feel in your ability to cope with stress, the less it will negatively affect you.
Here are 5 ways you can develop and build your resilience levels:
1. Cultivate Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the mainstay of personal growth and resilience. It’s a skill that includes observing and understanding your own behaviour patterns and how you react in different situations.
For example, during disagreements with loved ones, self-awareness helps you pause before making a snide comment that could escalate the situation. When you’re aware of and in control of your behaviour patterns, you have the power to choose your responses rather than reacting impulsively. When you lead with responsiveness instead of reactivity, you’re more likely to create positive outcomes in your interpersonal relationships and reduce one of the biggest stressors there is in life: mis-communication.
2. Practise Nervous System Regulation
Understanding and regulating your stress response is key to building resilience. Your stress triggers are unique to you, and recognising what sets off your fight-or-flight response can help you manage it more effectively. I teach heart-centred techniques that allow you to calm your stress response, helping you recover faster when life throws you a curveball.
Nervous system regulation doesn’t mean you’ll never feel stressed again; rather, it gives you the tools to control your reactions. Whether you tend to be anxious or have a quick temper, these techniques empower you to calm down before stress takes over completely.

3. Prioritise Self-Care
Self-care isn’t just about the occasional spa day; it’s about daily practices that nourish you. It’s about finding moments each day to recharge your energy and look after your well-being. It could be as simple as enjoying your morning coffee alone in your garden, reading a book before bed, or taking a quiet walk and listening to the birds singing.
The key is consistency. Taking care of yourself daily helps prevent burnout and gives you the strength to face life’s challenges with a clearer mind and a more resilient spirit.
4. Cultivate Connections
Human connection is essential for resilience and well-being. In our busy lives, it’s easy to neglect relationships, but having a support network is crucial for navigating stressful situations. Make time for friends and family, even if it’s just a quick phone call or a bi-weekly coffee date.
Talking things through with someone you trust can be incredibly therapeutic. It helps you process your thoughts and emotions, providing you with perspective and comfort when you need it most.
5. Shift Your Perspective
When things don’t go as planned, our initial reaction often dictates how we feel about the situation. Resilience comes from the ability to shift your perspective and look for the lesson in each challenge. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this experience? Is there a different way to view this situation?”
This mindset shift helps turn failures into opportunities for growth. When we reframe our challenges as lessons, we take back control over how we respond and find constructive ways to move forward.
Moving Forwards With Resilience
Building resilience isn’t about never facing difficulties; it’s about developing the tools to handle them in healthier ways. By cultivating self-awareness, regulating your stress response, prioritising self-care, nurturing connections and shifting your perspective, you can strengthen your ability to adapt to and recover from life’s inevitable ups and downs.
